Before you get started, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • It's free.
    Adding your listing to Google Places is free, and Google doesn't accept payment to include particular listings or sites in their search results. However, they do offer locally-targeted advertising through their AdWords program.
  • Every business listing must have a mailing address.
    This is the physical address where mail can be sent to your business. If you work from home or you are a mobile-only business you can specify service areas and choose to hide your physical address later on!
  • There shouldn't be more than one listing per physical location.
    Even if you're a doctor who is a cardiologist and a chiropractor or a service that covers multiple towns, you shouldn't have two listings. Instead, use the description of your business or categories to explain the different services your business offers.

How it works

Each business listing on Google is in fact a giant 'cluster' of information that they get from a few different places: Yellow Pages, for example, as well as other third-party providers. However, the basic information that you submit through Google Places is the information that they trust the most. This means that it will appear instead of any basic information that they get from anywhere else. To make sure the basic information you submit is accurate, they will ask you to verify it first by entering a PIN that will be sent to either your business address or phone number.
You can add other information to your listing too - such as a description of your business, for example, as well as photos, reviews, or information about hours and parking costs - that will also appear above similar information from other providers.

Why add your listing with Google Places?

Once you've verified your listing, you can enhance the Place page for your business by adding photos, videos, coupons, and even real-time updates like weekly specials all on your Place page. Verifying your listing gives you the opportunity to share even more information about your business with Google.

It is a good idea to read "Google Places Quality Guidelines" to make sure that your listing will be approved to appear on Google.

To start creating your free listing, go to the Google Places and sign in with your Google account. If you don't already have a Google account click Sign up now to create a new Google account. You can also use an AdWords login and password, if you have one.

AdWords enables you to create online advertisements and show them on Google and across a huge network of partner websites. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, and you control how much you spend on each click, your daily budget, and where your ads appear. AdWords accounts also include graphs and performance data so you can track what's working and edit your ads accordingly.

How does AdWords work?

  • You create your ads
    You create ads and pick words or phrases (called keywords) that are related to your business. You then use these keywords to create ads that target your potential customers when they search for your products or services on Google.
  • Your ads appear on Google
    When people search on Google using the same or similar keywords, your Google AdWords ad can appear alongside or above the search results as a "Sponsored Link." Now you're advertising to an audience that's already interested in what your business offers.
  • You attract customers
    People can simply click your ad to make a purchase, browse your website, or learn more about your business.

Remember that AdWords ads are always separate from Google search results. You cannot influence the search results or alter the way your own site appears in the natural search results by using AdWords. However, you can use AdWords to target the same audience as search results do: those people who are searching for offerings just like yours. You can also show your ads on Google's Display Network partner sites to reach people who are browsing other websites that match your products or services. Google Boost is set up from within your free Google Places account. Google Places helps your business get found on Google Search and Maps.

When you add Google Boost to your listing, you can advertise your business on Google and Google Maps (including mobile devices) and attract more visitors to your website or Place page. With Google Boost, simply set up a monthly budget for your ad, and they will determine what search keywords trigger your ad based on the categories that you select. You'll only pay for the clicks that your ad actually receives.

How much does Boost cost and how will I be billed?

Cost
When you set up Boost, you control what you spend by setting up a monthly budget. You can choose from several price ranges, or set your own monthly threshold equal to or greater than $50 per month. Your credit card on file will be billed whenever you reach that monthly threshold.

Billing
If you are an existing AdWords customer, the credit card in your AdWords account will be your automatically designated payment method for your Boost ad. You will not be prompted to edit your credit card information in your Places account when you sign up. Please be aware of this, especially if you have signed up for Tags previously, as Boost ads will not be charged on the credit card account that you might have previously used for Tags.

Once you have completed signing up for your new local ad, your ad will begin serving within one day. Google bills you after 30 days or when your account spend reaches your billing threshold, whichever comes first. You can always keep track of your spend by checking your Boost dashboard page in your Google Places account.
